Reacting to 5-star reviews of books I didn’t like!

Hey everyone! Welcome or welcome back to my blog!

So I have done a couple of posts reacting to poor reviews of books I loved, so I thought of doing the opposite for once! I honestly don’t have very many books that I hate, so this one might be just a one-part series, but let’s get into it!

Disclaimer:

  1. This is just a fun little thing I am doing, I do not intend to hurt any author, reader or anybody else.
  2. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, these are just mine.
  3. There might be spoilers, but I will indicate the books where there are spoilers. So, well just keep a lookout for that.

Let’s get into it!

Book 1: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han (My rating: ⭐)

What. Even. Is. This. Book.

Okay, um, vibes don’t seem immature? I am sorry? I think you meant vibes don’t seem mature? Because except Laurel there are exactly zero characters who are actually mature? Everyone, specifically, Belly is the most immature protagonist I’ve ever read? Ugh. And I was not torn between two boys when I was 16, and believe me I’d know since that was just an year ago. And I was definitely not torn between two brothers anytime in my entire life. And Conrad and Jeremiah? Great love interests? Right sure, if you’re into a guy who’s either broody all the damn time or sunshine all the damn time with zero depth. Ugh.

Book 2: It’s Not Summer Without You by Jenny Han (My Rating: ⭐⭐)

Poignant:❌
Dramatic: ✔ (Much more than necessary)
Compelling:❌

Characters that make you root for them? Hahaha no, I just wanted Jeremiah to have a good ending because he was nice (merely). Belly and Conrad could have gone to hell for all I could care. Oh, and the book got under my skin as well, just not in the same way haha.

Oh my god, YES, an emotional love triangle is so cool, but only when it consists of two brothers, so that the girl can tell her children that she’s kissed their uncle. How romantic.

Book 3: We’ll Always Have Summer (My Rating: ⭐)- Yes I hate the whole trilogy because (and I cannot emphasize enough) it’s dumb.

Okay, this book, honestly, dumbest of the lot. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND DECIDES TO GET MARRIED WHEN THEY’RE 18?

Lmao, I’m having a really hard time finding a review to put on here, because literally all of them mention this one quote of how ‘he’ gives stars and shit and not flowers and candy. And then them being what a roller coaster this was.

****Spoiler alert!****

Yes, I indeed had tears at the end too. Because I wasted 3 precious hours of my life listening to this audiobook all while thinking why I was listening to it, and then listening to it anyway because, surely, not so many people could be dumb and support two teenagers getting married. And yeah, Belly and Conrad deserved each other because they’re both DUMB.

You relate to it? Huh, guess you just like messing with two brothers’ heads and they like messing with yours. You probably are also secretly in love with one of them while dating the other while also accusing that other brother of cheating on you, when in fact, you were broken up. Wow, your life’s dramatic.

Literally took a minute to calm myself down because that’s the amount of anger I feel thinking about these books. UGH.

Book 4: Without Merit by Colleen Hoover- (My Rating: ⭐.5)

You know, Merit’s the name of an actual person?

So are Luck and Utah.

Girl, I love me a mental health book as much as the next person, but this was not a proper mental health novel, and you know it. Yeah, my heart broke too when I realised I had wasted hours reading a book I could have gone without reading.

I don’t even want to say anything else, ugh.

Book 5: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart (My Rating: ⭐.5)

This book has all the hype only because of one plot twist. You cannot change my mind.

You know what, you can take my copy for yourself and give yours to everyone to read.

And I did go into it blind and when the plot twist came, I read it once again and literally just carried on. It did not affect me. Period.

And it’s not the best book in YA or any genre, lmao.

That’s it for now, folks! Which novel of these do you love/hate? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I watched the series based on The Summer I Turned Pretty on Prime and (even though I know the stories aren’t exactly same) the whole time I felt like going and hitting belly on the face😇
WHO CAN BE SO DUMB?!?? And I totally agree that except Laurel, no one, like NO ONE is mature enough to do anything!

but the sarcasm in this post>>>😭😭😭

    1. Aah, almost everyone I talk to hates this novel, so how does it have so many people gushing over it on GR??? Should I take this as a sign that Jenny Han put up fake ratings and reviews *shudders*

Thank you so much for reading!

  2. I’ve never read summer I turned pretty but I stopped watching the show because…idk it just felt like all of the cliche YA tropes were smashed together into one awful soup? So you’re def valid for hating on the books lol.

Agreed, conrad is dumb, and Jeremiah is sweet but at the same time, marrying at 18?!??!
I did like the ending though..
    😂So angry
And yeah we were liars had a weird plot twist, i don’t really know how i feel about it lol.

    1. Yes. Yes, indeed I do.

I know right! I am gonna turn 18 in less than 6 months, and believe me, marriage is the last thing on my mind!
Well, I was never really Team Conrad so bleh
lol, I mean I genuinely do not like all these books
      Ah, I see!
      Thanks!!!!

  4. I’ve been waiting for you to do this post forever, and I have to say – I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest! 🤣🤣🤣 Oh my gosh, I love how petty you were by straight-up putting the entire The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy on here!! Your thoughts on Book #2’s dramaticness had me cackling! 😁 And I remember rolling my eyes so much at all of the marriage stuff in the final book, but since I was a dumb teenager at the time and actually rooting for Belly and Conrad, it didn’t bother me too much. It didn’t excite me too much, either, though… Like I said, this series put me off from reading To All the Boys for ages!!

I haven’t read the other two (and don’t plan to, either 😅), but I also very much enjoyed your rants on them! Feel free to give us a Part Two to this at some point! 😉

    1. Ah, glad to hear you weren’t disappointed!
I mean, it’s not a very good trilogy! Ah, To All the Boys is much much better, I can vouch for that!

I mean, I definitely am planning one, I just don’t have enough books, lol! But there’s a rant on Perks of Being a Wallflower coming out soon, so stay tuned for that, haha!

      Thanks for reading Naemi!

  5. I read the Summer Series books a long time ago, and I do remember liking them. However, if I were to ever read them now, I honestly don’t know if I could finish them.
I heard good things about the show, but I don’t know if I’ll watch it or not.

  6. No but HAVE I EVER MENTIONED THAT I AM ABSOLUTELY LIVING FOR YOUR THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY RANTS???? sorry but I’m OVERJOYED you hated the books so much because 1) I’m not alone anymore like that 2) YOUR RANTS!!!!

I probably never should have picked up the series after your reviews but I’m dumb like that. AND THEN ENDED UP HATING IT TOO. and it kind of just keeps getting WORSE WITH EACH BOOK??? Belly’s only purpose in life is to MAKE CONRAD FALL IN LOVE WITH HER?? It’s like WHAT THE HELL MAN did no one ever teach you all the ‘you only get one life’ and all that shit?? WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU WASTE IT LIKE THIS??? and everyone’s just annoying AND YES THEY GET UNDER YOUR SKIN AND HOW IS THIS SERIES SO HYPED????? IT MAKES NO SENSE OK

    1. I mean a lot of people hate the books, and having heard only good, or mediocre things about the books- I am glad to have found a few people who hated the books!

I mean honestly, the third book, which ironically is the most loved, is the one I hated the most, lol
But on the brighter side the show’s supposed to be better? I am not brave enough to watch it yet, so the day I become brave enough, I ll watch it lol
And yess, ugh had Belly been a better protagonist – the books could have been a solid3.5 or even 4 star reads but no- Belly had to be annoying- ugh!!
